I actually got my start in the credit card industry as a salesman in Albany. I worked for a major bank and my job was to sign up as many new cardholders as possible. I would go into local businesses, pitch the bank’s credit card, and try to get people to apply right then and there. It was a high-pressure sales environment and I admittedly didn’t always paint the full picture about the potential downsides of credit card use.
That experience made me realize there was a real need for more transparency and consumer education around credit cards. So I left that sales job and started Niomg.com to provide the objective information I wish I had been able to give customers when I was a credit card salesman. Now I’m focused on helping people use credit responsibly rather than just trying to maximize sign-ups.
